Punched Tin Mirrors
Like most Mexican hand-crafts, there is a big difference in the quality of workmanship between different producers. When we first started buying and ordering punched tin products, there were times that our shipments would go straight to a dumpster... yup, that bad. We got mirrors which looked as if they'd been run over by a mexican market bus... both coming and going! A big problem is cottage industry. One industrious producer may farm out part of a big order to his next door neigbor, and the part of the same order to the guy down the street. The neighbor may make magnificent pieces, while the other guy makes garbage. You never do quite know what you'll get. This all changed when we finally found Ernesto. He and his family have an "in-house" workshop, and the quality control is great. In fact, we're convinced that Ernesto's punched tin mirrors are the very best Mexico has to offer.
